Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Builder Games?

The Builder Games is a competition for eight teams to compete in a series of building-related challenges and the construction of one-of-a-kind playhouses, as over 150 guests cheer and watch from the sidelines. Completed houses are then auctioned, the money raised benefiting the Supportive Housing Program and Camino Scholars of PSHH.

Who can participate?

Eight team slots are available, each team made up of four individuals. Team members can be coworkers, family, or friends, but all must be 18 or older.

What is included with team entry?

All team members will receive a participation medal, delicious barbeque, and craft beverages.

When is the registration deadline?

Enter your team by January 31, 2025 or until all available team slots are filled!

Will there be a team meeting ahead of the event?

Yes! Teams will have an opportunity to learn more about the event, ask questions, and meet the other teams via a virtual meeting on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

What are the building-related challenges?

The Games begins with a series of fun challenges that require some bending, stretching, and in past years, a short run. If there is an element you prefer not do, a fellow team member can sub in. Each year is a bit different, but you'll be told the specifics during the team meeting.

How are the playhouses built?

The playhouses are built in two phases. The first phase is off-site and known as the 'pre-build'. During this phase, teams will have their basic house kit shipped directly to them. They can then spend as much time as they wish assembling and creatively modifying up to the painting and decorating stage. The second phase will take place at the event where teams will complete their entries, ready for auction, in front of a live audience.

What if teams are unable to do an off-site pre-build?

For those teams unable to meet or work on their playhouse prior to the event, the opportunity to pre-build (same as above, up to painting and decorating) will be offered from 8am-12pm on the day of the Builder Games.

What modifications can be made to the basic playhouse kit?

As long as teams stay within the dimensions and weight limits (see below), there are no restrictions. We'd love to see your unique designs! Remember the aim is for each playhouse to raise as much money as possible, so consider the auction, the audience, and final recipient of your fabulous creation.

What are the size and weight limits?

Finished houses may not exceed:
o Length 9’5”
o Width 5’5”
o Height 5’3”

Finished weight may not exceed what your four-person team can easily lift.

Size and weight restrictions may be exceeded only if a written statement is received from the competing team two weeks before the Builder Games stating that they will be responsible for the expense and delivery of the playhouse to the winning bidder within five days of the event.

What equipment is provided?

Playhouse kits will be shipped directly to teams three months in advance of the Builder Games. During the pre-build, you are responsible for any tools, safety equipment, or additional materials they may need.
On the day of the event, hard hats and small hand tools, such as hammers and screwdrives, will be on hand.

What do teams need to bring to the event?

Teams must bring their pre-built playhouse by 12pm, along with any tools, equipment, and items needed to complete their project, to include decoration. All team members are required to wear close-toed shoes. Team apparel, hats, and sunscreen are encouraged.

What time do teams need to arrive?

Pre-built houses need to be onsite by 12pm the day of the event. Teams must be checked in and ready for the final safety briefing at 1pm.

How long do teams have to complete their playhouses at the event?

Teams will have two hours to complete their build before judging and the auction begins.

How do family and friends purchase tickets to watch?

Tickets can be purchased for guests of Builder Teams at a discounted rate of $75 each through the 'Enter a Team' form above or by contacting the Events Team at [email protected] or (805) 540-2452.

Is there a prize?

Apart from glory and eternal bragging rights, three prizes will be awarded: People’s Choice, Judge’s Choice, and the Builder Games Champion!
